Step-Up/Step-Down Voltage Regulators
Buck-boost and SEPIC converters work with input voltages that are higher than, equal to, or lower than the regulated output voltage, making them especially well-suited for battery-powered applications in which the battery voltage begins above the desired output voltage and drops below the target as the battery discharges. For applications where the input voltage will always be well above or below the output, consider step-down or step-up regulators. Note 2: The S9V11x family has a minimum start-up voltage of 3 V, but it can operate down to 2 V after startup.
Note 3: The S8V9Fx family has a minimum start-up voltage of 2.7 V, but it can operate down to 1.4 V after startup.
Note 4: The S21Z1F12 is intended as a 12 V regulator, but it also has a 5 V output that can deliver up to 300 mA continuous when the 12 V output current is zero (using the 5 V output reduces the current available on the 12 V output).
Note 5: The S21Z1F12 can operate down to around 4.6 V with reduced output current capabilities.

The S7V7F5 switching step-up/step-down regulator efficiently produces 5 V from input voltages between 2.7 V and 11.8 V. Its ability to convert both higher and lower input voltages makes it useful for applications where the power supply voltage can vary greatly, as with batteries that start above but discharge below 5 V. The very compact (0.35″ × 0.475″) module has a typical efficiency of over 90% and can supply up to 1 A when stepping down and about 500 mA when stepping up.

This step-up/step-down voltage regulator consists of an isolated DC-to-DC power module between an input step-down (buck) regulator and an output step-up (boost) regulator. This enables up to 100 mA at 12 V out or 300 mA at 5 V out from a wide 5.5 V to 36 V input.
