There is no single optimum inductance for all operating points, and in general, we need some balance of inductance, size, resistance, etc. for boards like ours that are intended to work over a wide range of operating conditions. We did lots of testing with that regulator and Micrel's evaluation board (which uses a 1.5uH inductor) to find the best values for all of the components within the constraints we were working with.

We have not characterized the ripple or line regulation for these regulators, but both will depend on the exact details of your system, so if you wanted to be sure they would hold a steady enough 5V for your sensor boards, you would probably have to test them in your setup. If you want the cleanest supply, you might consider boosting from your 5V bus to 5.5V or 6V and then regulating linearly from there. If you have more questions or would like more advice on how these regulators might behave in your setup, I recommend posting more details about it on our forum.

We have not characterized these regulators with heatsinks, but you could try adding one to see how much improvement you would get. It would probably be most effective on the silkscreen side of the board above the two large FETs. Additionally, we have generally found forced airflow to be more effective than a heatsink alone. For fun one of our engineers designed a fan enclosure for these regulators and in some brief tests was able to get several extra amps out. If you have access to a 3D printer and want to try it out, you can download it from Thingiverse. If you do try that enclosure or heatsinking, we would be interested to hear how it goes.

New MOSFET-based power switches
- 30 January 2018There is only a direct connection between the CTRL pin and ground when the transistor connected to the OFF pin is turned on, and we warn on the switch's product page never to have both pins high at the same time. From your description of your capacitive switch it sounds like it would probably be more straight forward to just use it to directly control a MOSFET that can handle the current draw of your load. Could you provide more information about the touch switch?

You can supply up to the rated maximum VIN voltage directly to the CTRL pin on our pushbutton power switches (20V for the LV and 40V for the SV, MP, and HP) as long as you do not exceed the voltage you are supplying to VIN. Is your supply at least 12V? By the way, if you have not already noticed, the internal structure of the control pins on the switch is given in the "Using the Pushbutton Power Switch" section of the product page.

It is generally bad practice to directly connect two voltage sources, so you should implement something to isolate your 12-15V rail from the output of the regulator. Appropriately rated diodes could work for that. Even when the regulator is off, it is not good practice to connect another voltage to the output, and you should definitely not connect more than 5V.

We do not disclose what IC is used on this regulator. We will be releasing an adjustable version soon, though stock will initially be limited because of component shortages. Please contact us directly with the details of your requirements (output voltage, quantity you need, when you need them, etc.), and we might be able to get you something sooner than the regular release.
